Groups and Discipleship

Highlights

We can’t get over how much is happening in small and large gatherings around the Metro each week. It would be nice if we could all attend every Table Group and Pathway meeting, but since we can’t, here’s a window into what’s happening!

Table Groups

This Spring we had 10 Table Groups and several more are ready to begin this fall.

Over 80% of our church attends at least one Table Group!

One of our core values is to create belonging. That’s what Table Groups are for. Here’s what some of you said about your group:

“I usually can get my mind and heart tuned and ready for worship on Sunday mornings, but during the week, the stress and chaos of life tends to take control. Meeting with our Table Group re-establishes my connection heavenward and reminds me that I am not alone in the day-to-day sufferings that we all experience. I am incredibly grateful for the strong relationships our family has made with others in our Table Group and for all of the encouragement it has given us when we feel like we are merely surviving instead of thriving.”
— Justin
We have experienced high highs and low lows in our group, and more than any other small group I’ve been a part of, my Table Group exemplifies rejoicing with those who rejoice and mourning with those who mourn. I’m grateful for not only our weekly meetings, but all the prayers, check-in texts, bonfires, game nights, and coffee dates that have truly kept us in each other’s lives every week.

This year the Middle School girls have been taking a look at the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7, using the book What if Jesus Was Serious by Skye Jethani as a study guide. We’ve covered some really deep, complicated topics like enemy love, seeking Jesus rather than the approval of the world, conflict management and forgiveness, handling anxiety, rejecting a scarcity mindset in favor of living generously, and beyond. These girls ask amazing questions and aren’t afraid to wrestle through hard things.

We’ve also had the joy of hosting a handful of amazing special guest speakers who may be familiar to you, like Kelly Andrews, Tarin Obbink, Jay Erickson, Emily Lawson, and more. We’ve gotten to hear testimonies, explore the relationship between God and science, use art as a tool for prayer, and more.

And lest you start to think we keep it too buttoned up at youth group, we did get up to some shenanigans as well, including The Great Chickening of 2024. May the memory of Chicken Bob the Ceiling Chicken live on in our hearts forever.

Next year we will be adding some really awesome 6th grade girls, and we’re excited to hear from them and learn with them! As leaders we would love prayers that we can manage those new dynamics with grace and wisdom. Our plan right now is to really dig into scripture next year, starting with a study on where the Bible came from and how to read it well.

Discipleship Pathway

We exist to invite people to the way of Jesus. The primary way we do that is through our Discipleship Pathway.

In its 6th year, the Pathway got an upgrade in 2024 in a new workbook format. Dozens of you are using these practices each week as a diving board into conversations with God and each other.

The discipleship pathway has helped me establish better routines of connecting with God through reading the Word and prayer. It has encouraged me to re-examine where I am at in my walk of faith and how I can better live a life that serves and glorifies God.
— Nick, Des Moines
Working through the Pathway has brought clarity and understanding where I had doubt and renewed strength in my life. I am so happy for the workbook! I am not done but can’t wait for more!
— Terrie, Des Moines
Brought me closer to acknowledging the importance of opening up my life, and handing the “things” to him. Not carrying a load helps to be more optimistic in remembering who we are walking with, and knowing he has a plan for us and has already sacrificed his only son for us. Life is found inside his word. I can claim the gifts. Thank you for making this available. Then, for it to be free to spread the word, help others and myself, to continue to grow, is amazing!
— Jody, Michigan
I like having this resource when asking someone to be in a mentoring relationship, as I have a clear way to show them the journey I’m inviting them to take.
