Do Justice for Kids & Families
DAY 1
Read Together
Read the following passages of scripture and discuss with your kids:
Hebrews 13:16 (NIrV): “Don’t forget to do good. Don’t forget to share with others. God is pleased with those kinds of offerings.”
Proverbs 14:31 (NIrV): “Anyone who crushes poor people makes fun of their Maker. But anyone who is kind to those in need honors God.”
Proverbs 22:9 - “Those who give freely will be blessed. That’s because they share their food with those who are poor.”
Micah 6:8 - “The Lord has shown you what is good. He has told you what he requires of you. You must act with justice. You must love to show mercy. And you must be humble as you live in sight of your God.”
DAY 2
Pray
Today, let’s ask God to give us HIS heart for the poor. How has God taken care of your needs? What can we do to be kind and generous to someone in need today?
Go on a prayer walk. Walk though your neighborhood slowly today, praying for each family as you pass their home, and asking God for opportunities to share His love with them. As Pastor Phil mentioned in his sermon this week, you can pray these two things while you walk:
God, let me see this neighborhood through your eyes.
God, bring someone across my path.
Ask God to move among your neighbors, to allow His presence to fill each home and heart. Ask Him to give you eyes to see the needs around you, and how you might be able to meet them. Keep your eyes open for anyone God brings into your path and be open to the conversations he leads you into.
DAY 3
Be Kind
Read the story “A Little Girl and a Poor Frail Lady” in The Jesus Storybook Bible or listen to it HERE. The end of the story says that “Jesus was making all the sad things come untrue. He was mending God’s broken world.” When we help make wrong things right again, or take care of the needs of others, we are joining Jesus in that beautiful work of making things new. Today, try to find a way to be kind to someone who is lonely, sick, or sad. Maybe you can call or FaceTime, write a note to encourage them, or draw a picture and leave it on their doorstep.
DAY 4
Side D.I.S.H.
When Table Church member Karen Quinn was wrestling with a way to serve those in need in our community, God led her to create Side DISH. DISH stands for Decide I See Him/Her. This week, when you encounter someone on the side of the road with a sign, allow God to “side” track you, and decide to do something about that need! Think about the places you drive regularly, and where you may potentially encounter someone in need, then BE READY! Pack a small care package and have it ready in your car when you head out. This could be a simple bagged lunch (PB&J, apple, water, chips) or a bag filled with small toiletry items, or a food gift card/hand warmers/sanitizer/socks or mittens. Consider adding an encouraging note to the bag. Then when you stop, be sure to look that person in the eyes and ask their name (decide to see him/her!). Write the names down and pray for each person later in the week.
